Andrea Weber, a French-German artist, lives and works in Paris. With a degree in photography (University of the Arts in Essen), she continued her studies at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. A certified Qi Gong teacher, she also holds a teaching certificate in visual arts.

She explores the relationship between space/time and weather, and the connection between body and space. Her contemplative works are inspired by the sky and natural phenomena through her Weather Transcription protocol, in which she combines abstract paintings with objects derived from this practice. She also activates space through occasional performances.

Her work has been exhibited in France, Germany, Iceland, Taiwan, and Denmark, notably at the Akureyri Museum, the Beaux-Arts Paris, and the Japan Foundation Cologne. This fall, she is presenting her atmospheric installations on the sky at The Window in Paris.

She has been awarded grants from the Drac Île de France, the Northwest Iceland Cultural Support Fund, the DRAC Île-de-France grant, the NES Residency Iceland grant, and the OFAJ Paris grant.

Artistic approach

My work is conditioned by the space in which it is created and evolves. Through my paintings, installations, videos, performances, and photographs, I question our relationship with the weather.

The weather defines how we live our daily lives. It is existential, especially in Iceland, the country where I have been living and working extensively for several years: the weather is practically considered a person in its own right. This notion conditions every daily activity.

I draw upon this poetics of time to deploy or unfold fluid and flexible materials that can embrace an interior or exterior space. Observing construction sites, I was able to contemplate several materials that interacted with each other, such as tarpaulin, concrete, wood, scrap metal, wire...

Some of these elements became central to my research: for me, tarpaulin and tracing paper are materials that inspire lightness and transparency, and are easily transportable. Tracing paper folds and creases which, like drapery, open up perspectives on what is hidden from view.

My protocol involves painting in successive layers of highly diluted paint, which ultimately form drips resembling figures in free fall. These formats can be suspended or laid on the floor, but always interact with the natural light in the space.

My installations thus attempt to recreate a form of circulation or circular movement between walls, floors, and ceilings.This circular form is also found in my paintings because, for me, it opens a window to infinity.

More broadly, I am currently exploring symbolic geometric figures that tie in with my interest in spatiality.My aesthetic is accompanied by soft and acidic colors that originate in the Nordic or polar climates that punctuate my work.

Andrea Weber, artiste franco-allemande vit et travaille à Paris. Diplômée en photographie (Université des Arts d'Essen), elle a poursuivi ses études aux Beaux-Arts de Paris. Diplômée en Qi Gong elle est également lauréate du CAPES en arts plastiques.

Elle explore l'espace/temps météorologique et le rapport corps/espace. Ses œuvres contemplatives s'inspirent du ciel et de phénomènes naturels via son protocole Weather Transcription, dont elle associe des peintures abstraites à des objets dérivés de cette pratique. Elle active également l'espace par de performances ponctuelles.

Son travail est exposé en France, Allemagne, Islande, Taiwan et au Danemark, notamment au Musée d'Akureyri, aux Beaux-Arts Paris, à la Fondation du Japon Cologne. Cet automne, elle présente ses dispositifs atmosphériques sur le ciel à The Window à Paris.

Elle est lauréate de bourses de la Drac Île de France, du fond de support culturel nord-ouest de l’Islande, de l'allocation DRAC Île-de-France, bourse NES Residency Islande et de la bourse OFAJ Paris.

Démarche artistique

Mon travail est conditionné à l’espace dans lequel il naît et évolue. À travers mes peintures, installations, vidéos, performances et photographies, je questionne notre rapport au temps qu’il fait.

La météo va définir comment nous pouvons vivre notre quotidien. C’est existentiel, surtout en Islande, pays dans lequel je vis et travaille beaucoup depuis plusieurs années : le temps qu’il fait est pratiquement considéré comme une personne à part entière. Chaque activité journalière est conditionnée par cette notion.

J’utilise cette poétique du temps pour déployer voire déplier des matières fluides et souples qui vont pouvoir embrasser un espace intérieur ou extérieur. 

En observant les chantiers, j’ai pu contempler plusieurs matériaux qui dialoguaient comme de la bâche, du béton, du bois, de la ferraille, du fil…certains de ces éléments se sont retrouvés au cœur de mes recherches : la bâche ou le calque sont pour moi des matériaux qui inspirent la légèreté, la transparence, et qui sont facilement transportables.

Le calque possède des plis et replis qui, à l’instar des drapés, ouvrent des perspectives sur ce qui se soustrait au regard. Mon protocole implique un geste de peinture par couches successives très diluées qui forment in fine, des coulures comme des figures de la chute. Ces formats peuvent être suspendus ou ployer au sol, mais interagissent toujours avec la lumière naturelle des espaces. 

Ainsi mes installations tentent de recréer une forme de circulation ou de mouvement circulaire entre murs, sols et plafonds. Cette forme circulaire se retrouve également dans mes peintures car elle ouvre pour moi, une fenêtre vers l’infini. Plus largement, j’explore actuellement des figures géométriques symboliques qui rejoignent mon intérêt pour la spatialité. 

Mon esthétique s’accompagne de couleurs douces et acides et prennent leur source dans les climats nordiques ou polaires qui jalonnent mon travail.
